New version of classic ‘Annotations on the Sacred Writings of the Hindus’
Mike Magee introduces Sellon’s work, linking it to be establishment of tantrik sects in the West
Taipei, Taiwan, 21 December 2011 – Prakasha Publishing announces the availability of a new version of Sellon’s famous ‘Annotations on the Sacred Writings of the Hindus’. This publication adds a valuable introduction by Mike Magee and is careful to include the accents on the French included in Sellon's work, and provides excellent use of links to make the reading of the extensive End Notes better than any previous digital copy of the work.
Sellon was familiar with several of the texts that touch on the sexual rites practised by some of the tantrik sects. Sellon quotes from the Kularnavatantra, which he calls the Culanava, and mentions the Shyamarahasya, the Anandatantra, the Rudrayamala and other tantras, including Kalika tantras.
This new eBook contains a full copy of Edward Sellon's ‘Annotation on the Sacred Writings of the Hindus’, which was first published in a very limited edition in London, in 1865.
Sellon makes some references in this text comparing the Tantrik mysteries to the Greek mysteries – he is of the opinion that a libidinous stream informed not just Greek mystery cults, but Roman, Egyptian and Babylonian cults too.
A fascinating introduction by Mike Magee, writer/translator of several books on tantra, informs the reader of the importance of Sellon’s work.
‘Annotations on the Sacred Writings of the Hindus’ can be downloaded from Amazon for $9.99
(Subject to change and regional differences).

About Mike Magee
Mike Magee started to learn Sanskrit in the mid 1970s, initially taking lessons at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London. At that time he was a co-editor of the influential East-West magazine SOTHiS. He researched widely at the India Office and the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, digging up manuscripts which hadn’t seen the light of day for years. In 1981 he was lucky enough to break his leg and it didn’t heal for four years, which gave him lots of time to attempt translations of core texts. Magee has translated many texts since then, including the Vamakeshvarimata, the Matrikabhedatantra and the Yoni Tantra.
He has a website at www.shivashakti.com which contains much highly regarded material about the traditions. As well as his Sanskrit studies in his brown room, Magee also co-founded several influential tech magazines such as The Register and the INQUIRER. He currently edits www.techeye.net.
